Buford Man Killed in Cobb County Wreck

The fatal crash occurred Thursday afternoon on Interstate 285 near South Cobb Drive.

Cobb County Police officials are investigating a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon in Smyrna that killed a Buford resident. According to a CCPD news release, the crash occurred at about 1:43 p.m. in Smyrna on the westbound Interstate 285 ramp to South Cobb Drive. The incident, according to authorities, occured when a Chevrolet Cruze struck the back of a red and white 1998 Link Belt HTC8670 crane truck that was stopped in traffic. After striking the truck, the Cruze rolled backwards down the ramp toward southbound traffic on I-285, coming to a stop after rolling down the embankment between the interstate and ramp. 17 Killed in Holiday Weekend Accidents in Georgia

The 102-hour travel period ended at midnight on Dec. 25.

A total of 17 traffic deaths were reported in Georgia for the 102-hour holiday travel period which began Friday, Dec. 21 at at 6 p.m. and ended Tuesday, Dec. 25 at midnight, according to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP). GSP troopers investigated 685 crashes resulting in 300 injuries and 11 fatalities. Six traffic fatalities were investigated by other law enforcement agencies. The number of traffic-related deaths is much higher than in 2011 when three people were killed in accidents during the Christmas holiday travel period.  You might also be interested in reading:

Buford Man Killed in Barrow County Crash

A second motorist was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

A Buford resident was killed in a head-on crash in Barrow County on Friday, Dec. 21, according to the Georgia State Patrol.  Corey Scott Appling, 29, was killed about 7:40 p.m. when the 1996 Toyota Tacoma he was driving crossed the centerline on Rockwell Church Road, 0.3 miles west of Moons Bridge Road, and hit a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier. Alcohol is not believed to have been involved, and the victim was not wearing a seatbelt. The driver of the Chevrolet, Connie Sue Wallace, 46, of Winder, was taken to Athens Regional Medical Center for treatment.
