Six Killed in Traffic Accidents Over New Year's Holiday Period

The Georgia State Patrol investigated a total of 585 traffic crashes over the long weekend.

Six people were killed and 266 injured in traffic accidents over the New Year's holiday travel period according to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP). During the 102-hour period, which began on Friday, Dec. 28 at 6 p.m. and ended Tuesday, Jan. 1 at midnight, the GSP responded to a total of 585 traffic crashes. Three of the six fatal accidents were investigated by GSP posts in Athens, Madison and Valdosta. Cobb County Police, Perry Police, and Macon Police also investigated accidents involving fatalities. Early numbers indicate state troopers arrested 321 people for driving under the influence during the holiday period. 17 Killed in Holiday Weekend Accidents in Georgia

The 102-hour travel period ended at midnight on Dec. 25.

A total of 17 traffic deaths were reported in Georgia for the 102-hour holiday travel period which began Friday, Dec. 21 at at 6 p.m. and ended Tuesday, Dec. 25 at midnight, according to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP). GSP troopers investigated 685 crashes resulting in 300 injuries and 11 fatalities. Six traffic fatalities were investigated by other law enforcement agencies. 19 Traffic Fatalities Reported in Georgia During Holiday Weekend

Georgia State Patrol troopers investigated more than 600 accidents.

Nineteen people were killed and 263 people injured as a result of car accidents over the 102-hour Thanksgiving holiday travel period. The holiday travel period began at 6 p.m. on Nov. 21 and ended at midnight on Nov. 25. The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) investigated 11 of the 19 fatal crashes and handled 622 traffic accidents in all. Alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor in four of the 11 traffic deaths investigated by troopers. Seven of the victims were not wearing seat belts. GSP also investigated one fatality involving a pedestrian.
