An 84-year-old Sugar Hill woman and a 71-year-old Dacula woman had their purses snatched during two separate incidents.
Gwinnett County Police have arrested two people in connection with separate purse snatching incidents targeting elderly women. Charles Shannon Smith, 41, of Flowery Branch, and Tanya Elizabeth Parker, 36, of Buford, were booked into the Gwinnett County Jail on March 27 -- each on two counts of robbery -- and are being held without bond. According to GCPD public information officer Cpl. Jake Smith, the two were tracked down after a witness to a March 25 purse-snatching at the Buford Walmart provided police with the tag number of the suspect's vehicle. Gwinnett County Police are looking for individual who jumped out of a vehicle and snatched an elderly woman's purse in the parking lot of the Buford Drive Walmart on March 25. The 71-year-old Dacula woman said a male took her purse after she left it in the shopping cart while loading groceries into her vehicle. A witness told police a male jumped out of a blue van, snatched the purse and then got back into the van. The witness was able to provide police with a tag number for the suspect's vehicle. Video surveillance showed the blue minivan, believed to be a Dodge Caravan, circling the same set of parking rows several times. A Buford man arrested in connection with an alleged kidnapping, beating and robbery of a Dacula man made several attempts to escape police custody. On Feb. 23, Gwinnett County Police officers met with Lawrenceville police in Buford after obtaining information that a vehicle used by suspects in an armed robbery was parked at a home on Roberts Street. On the way to the Roberts Street residence, an officer spotted the vehicle, a green Ford Expedition, turning onto Bona Road. The victim of a kidnapping and armed robbery incident that took place in Lawrenceville believes his ex-girlfriend set him up. According to the Lawrenceville Police report, four men allegedly grabbed the victim, a 24-year-old man from Dacula, while he was in his ex-girlfriend's car off Hurricane Shoals Road and Wellness Way the evening of Feb. 23. The men dragged him inside their Ford Expedition and, according to the victim, kept punching and hitting him with the butt of a pistol. They drove him around the city, had him take off all his clothes and continued to threaten and beat him for 20 minutes. A Mill Creek High School student told police he was robbed by a classmate during a Feb. 5 incident outside the Rite Aid on Hamilton Mill Road in Buford. According to the police report, the teen had purchased some food and a drink at Kroger and was walking through the Rite Aid parking lot just after 4 p.m. when he received a call from a classmate. The classmate reportedly asked the teen to wait for him at the Rite Aid. The classmate arrived at the store a few minutes later accompanied by three males, all of whom allegedly attend Mill Creek High School. Two men escaped with cash and food after a Jan. 2 armed robbery of a Papa John’s pizza deliveryman. According to the deliveryman, an unknown individual placed an internet order and requested it be delivered to Plantation Ridge Apartments, located at 1022 Level Creek Road in Sugar Hill. Once the deliveryman arrived at the specified apartment, he knocked on the door, but no one answered. The deliveryman attempted to call the number listed on the internet order, but did not get an answer. The deliveryman then began walking back to his vehicle. A 30-year-old Buford woman said she was robbed at gunpoint during a Dec. 16 incident near the Oasis bowling alley on Horizon Parkway. The woman told police she was sitting in the front passenger seat of a vehicle while the owner was still outside the car. According to the woman, a man ran up to the car, opened the passenger side door, pointed a gun at her head and demanded money. When the woman said she had no money, the robber reportedly snatched a set of keys out of her hand and yelled “Let’s go!” in Spanish to a second male that had also approached the vehicle. A 27-year-old Buford woman was yanked out of her vehicle as she struggled to keep a robber from stealing her purse in the parking lot of the Hamilton Mill Road Kroger. The woman told police she was getting into her friend’s vehicle just after 10 p.m. on Nov. 21 when a car stopped nearby. A male exited the rear passenger seat of the car and approached the woman, repeatedly saying, “Hey you!” The woman reportedly told the man she did not know him and was halfway in her friend’s vehicle when the man grabbed her purse and began pulling on it. The woman struggled to hold on to the purse and was dragged out of the vehicle to the ground. A Dacula woman became a robbery victim during a Nov. 19 visit to the Mall of Georgia. According to the Gwinnett County Police report, the woman was sitting in front of the Nokia stand using her iPhone 5 when a young male grabbed the phone out of her hand and ran out of the front entrance of the mall. A Salvation Army volunteer saw the male exit the mall and quickly enter a white 4-door Ford Focus. The male, she said, was yelling “Go! Go! Go!” as he "dove" into the vehicle. The woman described the suspect as a black male, 15-17 years of age, approximately 5-foot-4 and of thin build. At the time of the incident, the male was wearing a white t-shirt. A male suspect escaped with approximately $100 after pointing a gun at a clerk and snatching money out of the register during a Nov. 11 robbery at the Hamilton Mill BP station on Hamilton Mill Road. Gwinnett County Police were dispatched to the gas station shortly before 5 a.m. on Sunday. According to the clerk, a male suspect entered the store, calmly approached the clerk and withdrew a silver pistol from his pocket. The robber reportedly instructed the clerk to open the cash register. When the clerk informed the robber he could not open the register unless a transaction was made, the robber grabbed a MIO energy drink and handed it to the clerk.
