A Buford woman hid in an upstairs room and waited for police to arrive after hearing an intruder in her Springlake Drive home during a March 27 incident. The woman called 911 at approximately 11:30 a.m. after hearing someone walking around in the basement. She then hid in an upstairs office and stayed on the phone with police dispatch until officers arrived. Police and K-9 officers entered the residence to apprehend the intruder. An officer staged outside heard a noise in the garage and alerted the other officers. The intruder, later identified as Michael Wayne Morgan, 22, of Buford, was found hiding inside a vehicle parked in the garage. Gwinnett County Police are investigating a March 3 burglary that occurred at a Buford Highway auto parts store. On the morning of March 3, employees of the Buford Autozone discovered a glass pane on the building had been broken and called police. Officers checked the store, but did not find anyone inside the business. A manager and a store employee subsequently checked the business, but did not notice anything missing. The manager further advised the alarm had apparently not been activated since he had not received any notification from the alarm company. While police were at the scene, the manager contacted the alarm company and confirmed the alarm had not been activated. Police were unable to determine how the window had been broken. …

Gwinnett County Police are investigating two recent burglaries at Buford businesses. On Feb. 16, the owner of a building in the 4100 block of South Lee Street reported his business had been burglarized. The man said he had recently purchased the building and is in the process of remodeling it for his auto title pawn business. According to the police report, the rear window of the business was smashed at some point between Feb. 13 and Feb. 16. The owner advised that since the business is not yet open, nothing of value was inside the building. The alarm system for the building and the security cameras were inoperative at the time of the burglary. An investigation into an alleged rape led Gwinnett County Police to a suspect in a string of convenience store burglaries. Police were called to a Sardis Drive residence on Jan. 27 to investigate a report of a suspicious woman. The woman claimed she had been raped by an acquaintance of hers at the home of Douglas McDaniel, 43. (Click here for related story) McDaniel had reportedly given the woman and her accused rapist a ride to his home in a white Chrysler Town and Country minivan that matched the description of a vehicle used in several Buford burglaries. McDaniel was not arrested at the time of the rape investigation, but the information about McDaniel and his vehicle was forwarded to detectives who made the arrest the following day. …

Nearly three dozen cartons of cigarettes were stolen during a Jan. 27 burglary at a Hamilton Mill Road convenience store. Gwinnett County Police responded to a burglary alarm at the Chevron located at the corner of Hamilton Mill Road and Puckett’s Mill Road and, upon arrival, found the front glass door of the business had been smashed. A hammer was found on the floor behind the cash register and cigarette cartons were scattered nearby, the report stated. A Hamilton Mill Road business was burglarized on Jan. 20, but strangely nothing was taken. A Gwinnett County Police officer was dispatched to Redooz, located at 2725 Hamilton Mill Road in Buford, after an employee at a nearby business noticed the front glass of Redooz had been smashed. The officer checked the inside of the business, but found no one inside. When the officer entered the business, the alarm activated but there was no record of any previous alarm notifications from the business. Once the owner arrived at the scene, she checked the business as well and indicated that nothing appeared to be missing. A Buford man sought help from law enforcement after finding illegal drugs in his 20-year-old son’s bedroom. The son, identified as Branden Fredricks of Springlake Circle in Buford, had been found unconscious by his sister on the afternoon of Jan. 7. According to the police report, the sister found a glass pipe and several pieces of a crystal substance beside Fredricks. “She woke him and asked him what it was, but he would not tell her,” the officer wrote in the report. The sister and her father subsequently searched Fredricks’ room and found two small baggies containing the same crystal substance. The father then called police. A burglar or burglars rang in the new year by breaking into the Supermercado on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Buford. The store manager advised police that it appeared the burglar or burglars pried open the back door to the store, possibly using a crowbar. Once inside, the burglar(s) walked to the front of the store, entered an office and stole $180 out of a register. Approximately $400 in phone cards were also taken. According to the Gwinnett County Police incident report, the office door is secured using a combination that only some of the employees have. So that’s why it wouldn’t start … A Flowery Branch man drove to the Steak and Shake on Buford Drive on Dec. 16 after his daughter called to say something was wrong with her vehicle. Upon inspecting the vehicle, the man found the problem -- the catalytic converter had been stolen. According to the police report, the vehicle had been in the parking lot for approximately eight hours. Seizing the opportunity While most people wouldn’t even consider walking into someone’s open garage and helping themselves to a bunch of tools, an opportunistic thief did just that on Dec. 20. Several townhomes were burglarized and numerous appliances stolen after a burglar or burglars smashed windows and broke doors to gain access to the interior of three residences on Brockenhurst Drive in Buford. A contractor with Rocklyn Homes contacted Gwinnett County Police on Dec. 21 after arriving at work and discovering the damage to the townhomes and the thefts. According to the police report, the front door of the first townhome had been broken and a refrigerator moved to the front door. The second townhome had a broken rear window and the third townhome had a smashed rear door window.
