The thunderstorms and lightning that rolled through Buford and Gwinnett early Sunday (May 10) had firefighters responding to several emergencies. Accoring to a Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services news release, crews responded to a "smoldering fire" at 3500 Elinburg Cove Trail in Buford. The fire was in the walls of the house, but no major damage was reported. Also, in responding to another call, an engine rolled up on a tree down in the roadway on I-85 near Buford Drive. The tree was blocking the road and caused a significant threat to motorists on the interstate, the release noted. A second engine was requested to assist with removing the tree. A Winder man wanted by multiple agencies is now in custody. On May 15, the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Unit located and arrested Jonathan Leonard Martin who was wanted out of Barrow and Gwinnett County. According to a press release from the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office, Martin, of 410 Foxdale Road in Winder, was wanted out of Barrow County for a probation violation. In addition to the Barrow warrant, Martin had 15 outstanding warrants against him stemming from a May 4 incident involving the Georgia State Patrol. Martin allegedly led troopers on a high speed chase after they attempted to stop him for a traffic violation. Martin subsequently crashed his vehicle and fled on foot. The Gwinnett County Police Department held their first ever ceremony to honor the lives of four fallen GCPD officers and the 19,000 officers nationwide who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
Next week marks 20 years since the Gwinnett County Police Department lost an officer in the line of duty. Next year will be the 50th anniversary of their first three losses. Chief Charles Walters decided now was the time to honor their lives. A Buford man was jailed on several charges after cursing and threatening Gwinnett County police officers, and injuring one, during a recent arrest, according to police records. On Monday (May 13) about 4:16 a.m., Gwinnett Police responded to a "person drunk" call at a Buford Dam Road address, according to the incident report. Police then reported seeing a man running down the middle of Buford Dam Road and "screaming." Police said the man, identified as Quincy Jaques Cantrell of a Shoal Creek Road address, would fall to the ground and get back up, screaming, "Help me, help me." Gwinnett Police have identified the person who was shot dead Monday (May 13) in Buford in an officer-involved shooting as Rodney Pike, 38, of Buford. According to a police news release, Pike had warrants out of Forsyth County. The incident arose when police responded to a "wanted person located" call at 5307 Pass Court address in Buford about 3:39 p.m. Monday, police said. The caller also advised that Pike was a drug user and would run from police. According to the Gwinnett Police news release: Several officers arrived on scene at 3:58 PM. Upon sight of the officers, Pike fled on foot and entered a parked vehicle a short distance away. Pike refused to comply with the officers' verbal commands to stop. Update: Police ID suspect killed in officer-involved shooting ---- Gwinnett County police are responding to an officer-involved shooting in Buford, Ga., that left one suspect dead. Shooting happened in the 5300 block of Pass Court in Buford, according to a news alert from a Gwinnett County police spokeman. All police officers are OK, but the suspect is deceased, police said. Gwinnett Police believe a man stabbed his girlfriend, then shot himself in the head after an apparent argument early Sunday in unincorporated Snellville. The woman, who was stabbed in the back, survived the attack, but the man died, according to a media alert emailed by Gwinnett Police Cpl. Michele Pihera. “The death of the male is being investigated as a suicide. The female is not a suspect in his death,” Pihera reported. Check back with Patch for updates. A Buford woman received injuries, and both she and her husband were arrested on battery charges after a recent domestic incident. According to the Gwinnett Police incident report, officers responded May 8 to a Lance Ridge Way address, regarding a domestic dispute. Man Kim Nguyen told police that he had been out with a friend "having a few drinks," police said. His wife, Truc Phong Ni Nguyen, confronted her husband about "staying out late and being drunk." The dispute ensued, and eventually, the man broke his wife's iPad and cell phone, after which she punched him in the back of the neck, the police report said. The man retaliated by kicking his wife in the face, breaking her front tooth, the report said. The officer also observed swelling …
