Take Care of Our Cells and We Take Care of Our Health

Our health is not about our genes, but the quality of our lifestyle. We need to understand the Metabolic Model of Aging to keep our cells healthy as we age.

Many people give up on taking charge of their health because they mistakenly believe that their quality of life is a function mostly of their genes and out of their control.  Nothing is farther from the truth.  Genes at best account for about 30 percent of how we age.  Our quality of life is by far a function of our lifestyle.  However, the “bad genes” argument helps justify continuing an unhealthy lifestyle.

I believe strongly in the Metabolic Model of Aging.  One of the most important statistics in our body is that we replace about 300 billion cells per day.  If the new cell is more damaged than the cell it is replacing we begin to slowly “age” and begin the cycle of degenerative disease.  Cell damage is not something we can easily see or feel.  It just “sneaks up” on us until one day we see a symptom like heart attack, stroke, diabetes, or cancer.  These are diseases not normally associated with young people. 

The two enemies of our cells are inflammation and oxidative stress.  This is called catabolic activity.  Both of these are created by the damaging effect of something called “free radicals”.  To keep cell damage to a minimum, we need to reduce free radical damage.  This can be done with better nutrition (more antioxidants), less stress, more exercise, no smoking, and some important herbs and supplements.  This Metabolic balance between catabolic, damaging activity and anabolic repair activity is like a “see saw” in our body.  When we are young, we have a high level of anabolic activity and lots of repair going on in our cells.  As we age, more catabolic activity takes place and we begin the slide downward.  If we know that this is how our bodies operate, we really need to increase anabolic activity, letting our bodies do what they naturally want to do to keep us healthy.

So, we are in control with our lifestyle choices.  We can keep our cells healthy if we understand what damages them and what we can do to repair them.  And, as I can attest personally, it is really not that hard.  Once we know better, we can do better.

Tammy, sorry about your wrist pain. You might try to strengthen your hands and wrists by squeezing a soft rubber ball, or at least keep some movement going on with your hands. I would be careful not to load up with pain pills. If you could make it to my studio I would have you place your hands on the Power Plate platform at massage vibration to get some deep blood flow through those hands. I had several clients that had various forms of tendonitis fixed with the Power Plate machine. Good luck!

I don't take pain meds except for ibuprophen (or naproxen) and aspirin, and that only occasionally. I actually did a huge workout today (even weights) and feel so much better. I think I've done more harm than good "resting" them, which I started my summer attempting to do. Keeping muscles warm and flexible is definitely something I should be more consistent in. I've had therapies in the past and after a few months saw little results; possibly due to the laziness of the "patient"-the patient has to be consistent- lol. Maybe once I get a diagnosis (ruling out arthritis and such), and in need of therapy I may give you a try! Sounds a little different than the one I had. I work in the Dacula area, so may come by. I got out of physical training for a while, but now that I'm back into it, I should be able to be more consistent. I totally understand how the personal training industry has flourished. I train, but have to be pushed myself. Put it this way, my drill Sgt. takes me to the limit and then makes me do 5 more - haha.

I wish massage therapy could get more publicity. People don't realize what our sedentary lifestyles have done to our health. I was in an auto accident years ago, and basically, the only problem was that my muscles had small tears in them (due to the stress of the accident). I went to a local doctor and was told that she couldn't recommend massage, but treated me with traditional methods. I had stopped going to my regular doc because he moved his office to N. Druid Hills and I just didn't want to make the drive. Now I wish I had. Later, when I went to him, I shared the experience with him and he told me that he would have highly recommended it and than he does quite often and that many insurances are now paying for it. Getting blood flow to the surface of muscles speeds up healing! What took me 6 months to get over could have taken maybe a month or so. Amazing.
