Lanier High Teacher Honored By National Center

Lanier High School teacher Michael Reilly was selected as winner of Aspirations in Computing Educator Award sponsored by the National Center for Women and Information Technology, according to a press release.

The award is given to teachers who have “demonstrated a commitment to encouraging young women’s aspirations in computing.”

Mr. Reilly leads Lanier High’s Center for Design and Technology (CDAT), a Georgia Department of Education STEM-certified program. Through CDAT, Lanier High students express their creativity and mastery of core subject areas through project-based learning and the use of technology.

By learning professional production techniques, students acquire the knowledge and skills for future careers in areas such as interactive design and game development, modern media and programming, digital video production and mobile media design, 2-and 3-D creation and animation, software development including mobile apps, and much more.

Mr. Reilly joined Gwinnett County Public Schools in 2005, teaching computer science at North Gwinnett High. In 2010, he joined the inaugural faculty at Lanier High. Mr. Reilly started his teaching career more than two decades ago as a mathematics teaching assistant in New Jersey. He also taught mathematics in Virginia and math and computer science in Boston before making Gwinnett County his home. In addition, Mr. Reilly holds experience from corporate America. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Business from St. Michael’s College and a master’s degree in Educational Administration from the University of Michigan.
Mr. Reilly has received numerous awards throughout his teaching career including being named one of six finalists for the 2009 Gwinnett County Teacher of the Year title.

As a recipient of the Educator Award, Mr. Reilly received an engraved commemorative award, up to $1,000 of expense reimbursement for computing-related professional development, and a laptop provided by AT&T and Dell.
