A woman drowned Saturday (June 1) in a boating-related fatality at Lake Lanier, according to media reports.
According to the Gainesville Times, the woman, 55, went under water while trying to help children riding on a tube that had flipped. The tube apparently was being pulled by a boat.
The woman was not wearing a life jacket, reports said, although the children were. The woman's relationship to the children is not known.
The victim's identity has not been released.
The accident happened in the Shoal Creek area of the lake, which is in Gwinnett County.
DNR spokesperson Rick Lavender said officials are investigating the incident. It is not known if alcohol was involved. There is no indication that another vessel was involved.
The fatality is the first of 2013 for Lake Lanier. There was an injury accident involving watercraft over Memorial Day weekend.
