Update: Two Shot Dead in Buford Incident

One person was shot and killed after reportedly firing at a Gwinnett County Police officer.

Gwinnett Police have identified the man and woman involved in the early morning fatal shootings in Buford. Police say Betty Jo Massengale, 80, was fatally shot in the back by James Daniel Guler, 73, who was shot and killed by police.

According to police, the two were not married, but lived at the address. "There is no history of any domestic-related matters within the past several years," according to a police spokesperson.

A man and a woman are dead after an Aug. 28 domestic incident in Buford.

Gwinnett County Police were called to the 6400 block of Old Shadburn Ferry Road in unincorporated Buford at approximately 12:36 a.m.Β in response to a domestic incident. Upon arrival, an officer was walking toward the residence when he saw a female in the driveway. Before the female could reach the officer, she was allegedly shot in the back by a male.

"The female fell to the ground and the officer fired at the suspect," GCPD public information officer Sgt. Brian Doan said in a released statement. "The suspect fell to the ground and fired another shot."

Both the male and female died, the officer was not injured.

The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave as the GCPD Deadly Force Investigation Team, the Criminal Investigations Division and the District Attorney's Office investigate.

The identification of the male and female are being withheld until next of kin can be notified.
