One of the officers began to frisk an adult Hispanic male. The male pulled away from the officer, withdrew a handgun out of his clothing and pointed the gun at his own head. Officers ordered the man to drop the gun, but he failed to comply.

"When he refused, the first responding officer fired a Taser, striking the suspect," according to Gwinnett County Police public information officer Cpl. Jake Smith. "The shot from the Taser did not incapacitate the suspect and he was able to pull out the probes.  Immediately after pulling out the probes, the suspect pointed his gun at the responding officers.  Three officers fired at the suspect, who was struck and killed."

The Deadly Force Investigation Team (DFIT), consisting of members of the Homicide Unit, the Crime Scene Unit, Internal Affairs, the District Attorney's Office, and the Medical Examiner's Office, is investigating the case.

"The officers involved will be placed on administrative leave. This is normal procedure in cases involving an officer involved shooting," Smith added.
