Rutledge said in an email that occupants in the unit where the fire started were alerted by the sound of breaking glass.

“They went to investigate and discovered thick black smoke on the main level,” Rutledge said. “One occupant tried to douse the flames with a bucket of water but was unsuccessful. They alerted the neighbors to evacuate and 911 was called.”

Two adults were displaced from the unit where the first started. Two adults and two children were displaced from the adjoining unit because of residual smoke and the gas and power being cut off to the building.
