Buford Woman Targeted by Accused Police Impersonator

A Dacula man is facing charges of impersonating a police officer after allegedly targeting a Buford woman who he blamed for interfering with his attempt to get a prescription refilled.

According to Gwinnett County Police, David Robert Lewallen, of 1720 Katrina Jo Ann Circle in Dacula, concocted an elaborate scheme to exact revenge against the Buford woman, who is an employee at a Buford medical clinic.

On Sept. 10, police responded to a suspicious person call at a Buford business. The caller told police a male identifying himself as a police officer presented a badge and began asking questions about the clinic employee. The male, later identified as Lewallen, was reportedly wearing a black t-shirt with “POLICE” on it and was driving an older model Ford Mustang. The caller said he found a flyer with the clinic employee’s photo and name printed on it when he arrived at work that morning. The flyer had the words “Have you seen this person?” printed above the clinic employee’s photo and listed some “alleged charges” against her. Another worker in the same business complex had also found a flyer with the clinic employee’s name and photo.

The following day, the clinic employee spoke with police. After an officer described the suspect to her, the employee indicated she knew who it might be and showed the investigating officer a copy of Lewallen’s driver’s license.

According to the clinic employee, Lewallen was a patient at the clinic and had been prescribed medication during an Aug. 21 visit. Lewallen reportedly attempted to fill the prescription in South Carolina. Because the prescription had been issued in another state, the South Carolina pharmacist became suspicious and refused to fill it. Lewallen allegedly called and left several messages at the clinic in which he accused clinic employees of convincing the pharmacy not to fill his prescriptions.

On Aug. 24, Lewallen reportedly returned to the clinic and demanded his patient records. During that visit, an allegedly angry Lewallen confronted the clinic employee.

“Mr. Lewallen continued to become more irate and used many ‘vulgar profanities,’ then said ‘You will be sorry.’ [The clinic employee] told Mr. Lewallen to leave the office. Mr. Lewallen got in his Ford Mustang and drove aggressively out of the parking lot,” the officer wrote in the report.

Police used a photo lineup to identify Lewallen as the police impersonator.

According to WSBTV, Lewallen denied impersonating a police officer and said he was there trying to warn people about the woman who works at the clinic.

Lewallen was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail on Oct. 14 and released several hours later on a $2,950 bond.
