Superman Quitting His Day Job to Become Blogger

After 70 years with The Daily Planet, Clark Kent a.k.a. Superman has decided to pursue a different career path.

In a new comic to be released Wednesday, the Man of Steel is hanging up his fedora to become ... a blogger.

USA Today reports Clark Kent has a "Jerry Maguire-type moment" in which he laments that journalism has given way to entertainment. Superman is also upset about the fact The Daily Planet has become part of the multimedia corporation Galaxy Broadcasting.

Poor, naive Superman. Why else would I, a journalist for Patch (a company owned by internet giant AOL), be writing this? 

"Why am I the one sounding like a grizzled ink-stained wretch who believes news should be about – I don't know – news?" Kent asks boss Perry White according to an article in The Telegraph.

Why indeed, Superman. This is 2012. News is about entertainment and engagement. It's about SEO, unique visitors and social media presence. News is dead, long live the news.

"This is really what happens when a 27-year-old guy is behind a desk and he has to take instruction from a larger conglomerate with concerns that aren't really his own," writer Scott Lobdell told USA Today.

Adapt and overcome Superman. It is what it is. 

So what exactly is Clark Kent going to do now when he isn't busy saving the world? The New York Post reports that Kent will launch a blog with Cat Grant, another former Daily Planet employee.

"I don't think he's going to be filling out an application anywhere," Lobdell told The Post. "He is more likely to start the next Huffington Post or the next Drudge Report than he is to go find someone else to get assignments or draw a paycheck from." 

That move, according to Deborah Jackson of Forbes, could be a smart one.

"It’s a great platform for bringing his brand into the 21st century and building a digital footprint. Other pluses include not having to face editor-in-chief Perry White every day, and a decrease in dry cleaning bills for all those gray suits," Jackson wrote.

I would be remiss if I failed to mention he could also choose to blog for Patch. 

Kent's departure from The Daily Planet is scheduled to take place in "Superman 13" available online and in comic book stores on Wednesday, Oct. 24.
