Earthquake Reportedly Felt in Buford

A Nov. 10 earthquake centered in Kentucky was felt in several states with unconfirmed reports the quake was felt in Dacula, Buford and other parts of North Georgia.

Residents in Dacula, Buford, Auburn, Winder and other parts of North Georgia reported feeling a 4.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Saturday, Nov. 10.

The quake, which struck at 12:08 p.m. and lasted approximately 15 seconds, was centered near Whiteburg, Ky., but was felt in at least 20 states according to reports submitted to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) website.

According to the USGS website, earthquakes in the East are typically felt over a much larger area than those in the West -- an area as much as 10 times larger than the area in which a similar magnitude earthquake would be felt on the west coast.

“Georgia has a history of earthquake hazards that dates back to 1811,” Chris Walsh of GEMA wrote in a 2011 post on ReadyGA.gov. “Our most severe earthquake took place in 1886, reaching 7.3 on the Richter scale. As recently as August 5, 2010, Georgia experienced a magnitude 2.2 earthquake less than 75 miles outside of Atlanta, Covington and Macon and only 10 miles from Milledgeville at Lake Sinclair.”

GEMA’s Ready Georgia campaign advises residents to prepare for natural disasters such as earthquakes by preparing a kit of emergency supplies, creating an emergency communications plan, and staying informed about potential threats and their appropriate responses.
