Restaurant owner Jimmy Parker has taken on a very ambitious project this holiday season.

Parker, owner of Red Sky Neighborhood Grill, has teamed up with Buford City Schools to provide Thanksgiving meals to 250 needy families.

According to Parker, 60 percent of Buford City Schools students are eligible for free or reduced lunches. The school system started a backpack program to send home food with the neediest children, but the holidays can be tough. That’s why Parker decided to step in and offer assistance.

“There’s a need,” he said. “I don’t have a lot, but I don’t have to worry about my kid being hungry so I’m going to feed them.”

On Thanksgiving Day, Parker will provide 1,000 hot meals for families identified as being most in need by school officials. The meals will include turkey, dressing, green beans, rolls and iced tea.

Parker knows it will be a massive undertaking, but he is determined to make the holiday brighter for Buford school children and their families.

“You’ve got to help out where you can,” Parker said.
