Gwinnett Police: Park Ranger Shot in Area of Buford Dam

Gwinnett County police say a person matching the suspect's description was found deceased inside a nearby vehicle.

Gwinnett County police are reporting that a park ranger has been shot in the Lower Overlook area of Buford Dam Park.

Police first received a 911 call about 10:15 p.m. Wednesday (June 26)Β advising that a park ranger had been shot.

When officers responded, they found the ranger with a gunshot wound in the torso, Gwinnett County police said in a news release. The ranger had managed to get to a main park road where passers-by called for help.

Before being transported to a hospital, the ranger gave a statement about the incident. He told officers that he had approached the suspect to tell her the park was closed when he was shot.

His current condition is unknown, but police said that he had been in surgery. Police are not releasing his identity at this time.Β 

"Responding officers checked the area and found a person matching the description of the suspect deceased inside a nearby vehicle," Cpl. Jake Smith said in the news release.

"It is possible the suspect committed suicide," he added.

The suspect was described as an adult black female, who was occupying a pickup truck. Police said her identity would be disclosed after her family is contacted.
