Buford Park and Ride Lot Dedicated to Former Commissioner

Gwinnett officials honored Maron Buice, community leader and former county commissioner on Monday, April 30.

The man who originated park and ride lots in Gwinnett County has been honored by county officials. On April 30, Gwinnett County representatives dedicated the park and ride lot at I-985 and Highway 20 in Buford in honor of former county commissioner Maron Buice. A plaque in honor of Buice will now be on permanent display at the lot he founded. According to a Gwinnett County press release, Buice established the I-985 park and ride lot after receiving complaints from constituents who had received tickets for leaving their cars parked along Highway 20 while carpooling to the GM plant in Doraville.  "Around 1972, Buice noticed a nearby vacant lot owned by the state of Georgia, so he contacted the state and worked out the construction and the …

Deal Signs Legislation Lowering BUI Limit in Ceremony at Lake Lanier

The new law also increases penalties for those caught boating while intoxicated.

Gov. Nathan Deal signed SB 136, a bill to strengthen public safety on Georgia's waterways, on Tuesday, April 22, at the Holiday Marina at Lake Lanier. The legislation, a portion of which is known as the Jake and Griffin Prince BUI Law, lowers the legal blood-alcohol content for boaters from a .10 to .08. The new law also increases penalties for those found to be boating while intoxicated. “Far too many tragedies have occurred as a result of boating under the influence and inadequate boater education,” Deal said in a released statement. “Last June, I vowed to work with the General Assembly to pass legislation in honor of Jake and Griffin Prince, who lost their lives last summer in a tragic accident. As I have said, if you are too drunk to …

Scrambling to Meet Monday's Tax Deadline? Request an Extension

The Internal Revenue Service says taxpayers who need more time to file don't need to panic.

Can't file your tax returns by the Monday, April 15, deadline? Extensions are available.  Those who haven't finished completing their returns can get an automatic six-month extension. The fastest and easiest way to get the extra time, the IRS says, is through this Free File link — use the free service to electronically request an automatic tax-filing extension on Form 4868. Filing this form gives taxpayers until Oct. 15 to file a return and allows individuals to avoid a late-filing penalty. To get the extension, you must estimate your tax liability and also pay any amount due. Can't pay the full amount you owe the government? Do Lawmakers Practice 'Selective Hearing?'

Selective hearing might be the best way to describe what is taking place in the political world.

As a parent, we have said to our children: “Are you listening to me?” In the sales world, listening is described as an art. The person who is the best at listening is the top sales person and the most successful in life. I often joke about men developing selective hearing when it comes to responding to what we have heard our wife say. Selective hearing might be the best way to describe what is taking place in the political world. As I talk with lawmakers, I receive the impression they are looking at me and want me to think they are listening, yet when the time comes for them to vote on an issue, they vote the opposite way I had encouraged them to vote. We sit back in wonder as we hear about what is taking place in Washington, where each …
