Georgia voters gave the state more authority over charter schools on Tuesday, passing a constitutional amendment empowering a commission to overrule local school districts that reject charter school petitions. With all counties fully reporting, the hotly contested amendment had support of 58.5 percent of voters. See selected county results below. President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan, according to network projections. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. Voters in Georgia on Tuesday cast their ballot for Mitt Romney, giving him the state's 16 Electoral votes, according to early results.
In a move that fell in line with expectations, Mitt Romney was projected to win Georgia’s 16 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Democrat Barack Obama. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Republican candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in Georgia and spent more time visiting the Peach State to raise money. The state has been a Republican stronghold in recent presidential elections. The economy was a key issue for many voters in Georgia state, which has had a higher than average unemployment rate. Bookies, statisticians say Obama will win a second term. Polls indicate race still close.
An Irish betting house is so sure President Obama will win reelection, they have already started paying off those who bet on him to win. According to Irish Central, the bookmaker says Mitt Romney gave it a good shot, but has no chance of winning. "Romney gave it a good shot and is doing well in the popular vote, but we suspect he's had his moment in the sun and is likely to be remembered more for his legendary gaffes than presidential potential,” a spokeswoman for the betting house told Irish Central. UPATE 5:50 pm If you are in line to vote at 7 pm, you will get to vote even though the polls close then. Tens of thousands of Fulton County voters have already cast ballots today. Turnout is especially high for today’s General Election, as it is in most Presidential election years. It's too early to know how this year compares to 2008. Results Updated 2 a.m., Wednesday Gwinnett County voters provided few surprises on Election Day. They came out in large numbers, voted mostly Republican and provided several lopsided outcomes. Nearly 75 percent of the county's registered voters casted their ballots, more than five percentage points better than the 2008 turnout. Gwinnettians voted for Gov. Mitt Romney for president, for incumbents in 11 races, including three Board of Education candidates, and in favor of the controversial Public Charter School Amendment (by a 63% to 37% margin), which drew similar margins elsewhere in the state. In the United States, the presidential election is decided by Electoral College votes. In total, there are 538 electoral votes in play. The votes are typically allocated on an all-or-none basis, meaning the candidate that wins the popular vote in a given state also wins that state's electoral votes. Each state is allocated a number of electors equal to the the number of people in that state's congressional delegation (the number of congressmen plus the two senators from each state).
